Julia Donaldson Books 5 The Snail And The Whale

Julia Donaldson has just smash hit after smash hit to her name and she is one of the best children’s authors from the UK. While she may be most famous for The Gruffalo and its follow up book, The Gruffalo’s Child. But this book, The Snail and the Whale teams her up once again with Axel Scheffler with whom she worked with on The Gruffalo books. So it is fair to say that many parents were very excited to read this book to their children when it was released as The Gruffalo was so well received.

The Snail and the Whale is a lovely story about a small snail who one day decides that he wants to see the big world. So he makes friends with a huge whale and he hitches a ride on the tail of a whale. The main theme of this story is friendship and adventure as well as making it a point to show that heroes come in all shapes and sizes.

During their adventure they come across ice caps, volcanoes, sharks and all other kinds of giant creatures and things. The little snail is very impressed and sometimes worried about these incredible things that he is seeing. But when things go wrong and the whale ends up beached. It is the little snail who saves the day and proves that it does not matter how big you are as anyone can do the right thing and be a hero. This is just a great story with such a lovely message that it is impossible not to fall in love with this book from the first time you read it with your child.

It is written in that fantastic Julia Donaldson style and the illustrations from Axel Scheffler really do bring these characters to life. This is the kind of book that your child will ask to read with you time and time again. But as the Snail and the Whale is such a great book, you will not mind at all. If you want a book that is going to make your child love reading then this is it.
